A celebratory follow up story!

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, I had the honor of popping off pride month with Lezcronymz Productions, powered by Heavenly Herbs, and their beautiful guests, at the “Exhale” day party for cannabis lovers of the queer variety. (Keep in mind I don’t mean to disinclude anyone…everyone in the Le’ community is love).

Diggin the scene

The event was held at the PentridgeStation pop-up space in West Philly, an outdoor location contained inside lush greenery and artistic reverence. It was a mesmerizing and immersive experience from the food, to the music and the delightful spirits that dwelled there for a time. An array of dope team members, vendors and other magicians brought all the razzle and the dazzle.

DJ Jay Latay spun intensely contagious sonic vibes that paired well with a delicious brunch provided by Zoey’s Soulfood with a Twist…and you know how us folx love some brunch!

The bar was lit…I’m speaking colloquially now but that’s how right the vibes were. Queue Barrington Levy 🎶 “if yer dealing war, backwards stay far…we’re dealing with truth and rights…”

The air was clear and the sun beamed between the clouds, promising warmth to pair with our joy. A full spectrum of love and smoke was visible from the sidewalk upon entrance beckoning attendees to delight in the safe space.

The What

Breathing easy has been quite the task for the collective as tensions build up against marginalized communities throughout the United States. It may sound cliche to some, but being expressive and having access to adult spaces that are free of discrimination judgment, fear and microaggression is not as open as we all think. It seems someone is always being left out, or worse. The point of intersection between cannabis enthusiastic-Black and Brown-LGBTQ light bodies at the “Exhale” event manifested successfully in mutual celebration and support.

The Who

The guest of honor, the Gem of West Philly, Sunflower’s SpaceCakes, was present and passionate as she delivered an impromptu word on The Lair, her family owned, 420-friendly adult social club. A staple safe space in the city for the last 3 years, The Lair was unjustly targeted in a raid back in March, landing Sunflower’s two sons behind bars. Though the case was dropped on the Friday before “Exhale”, in a divine outcome of legal affairs, only one of Sunflower’s son’s has been released to date.

The Why

The stigma on people that look a certain way and are associated with adult activities aimlessly targeted by the government, and despite decriminalization efforts in the Greater Philadelphia area, is intentionally burning a hole through our stash and blowing the high. Much like the souls that gathered on this sacred Sunday, the liberty of such persons should not be so easily usurped by the powers that prey.

The takeaways from Sunflower’s quick address are that we must understand our rights, we must not allow fear to provoke our voices and actions and that we must consistently support one another. This dissonance against the pseudo powers of elected officials and their militia is the only thing that has helped maintain the safe spaces that gods and goddesses like us create. We should never let up because we always come in peace.

A percentage of the earnings from “Exhale” will be donated towards legal fees incurred by Sunflower’s Spacecakes and her family. Always a good cause!

Good and better news? Sunflower is always taking and fulfilling orders! The Lair is also open to and hosting members! It’s another safe space to exhale!

The gems that were shared between party attendees and vendors are some that cannot be taken away from us because they are energetic. The primary energy that fuels them is love, acceptance and safety.

The End

As we danced our way in, around and out of the place, under the aura of the full Sagittarius moon, we were all blessed by the ethereal vibes that are always present when the soul tribe is near. Philly’s “Brotherly Love” felt tangible on this inaugural pride weekend, thanks to the efforts of the goddesses, Fame Neal and her partner Rachele Sanchez.
